“Footsteps in an Ancient Landscape” Tour Description:

Connemara! The very name evokes ideas of wildness, beautiful landscapes, lakes and shorelines. Hidden in this beauty are faint signals of thousands of years of human occupation. Drive through it, you miss it. Only on foot, and at a leisurely pace, can you discern the physical legacy of our Irish ancestors. From the lovely granite, lake-strewn landscape of Irish-speaking south Connemara to the folded hills of the north, we will search out beach and bog, hill and haven. Iron Age stone forts loom large. Evidence of early Christianity is everywhere. And older sites become obvious once shown; 3000 year old standing stones; 5000 year old megalithic tombs; traces of the foundation of the beginning of agriculture, all emerge from this wild beauty. This tour connects you into the layers of stories held in the land on which you will walk.

Tour highlights include the following and a map of specific sites will soon be added.

– the bare limestone landscape of the Burren
– the large stone ringfort Caherconnell
– the culture-rich, Irish-speaking region of South Connemara
– the political and ceremonial centre of the kings of the Ancient kingdom of Connacht – Rathcroghan
– Inishmaan, the middle and least visited of the Aran Islands
– the scenery, archaeology, history and lovely people of Inishbofin Island.
– The town and people of Clifden, the ‘capital’ of Connemara.
